Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) are on the rise across the UK. One of the most common STI is Chlamydia. It is generally found in the younger sexually active section of society but this is not exclusively the case. The age group for the same can be classified anywhere under 25 years of age, but people between 16 to 24 years are more susceptible it would appear from statistics. The biggest problem with this disease is the fact that there are usually no symptoms in many cases; hence, it is difficult to Avert passing the disease to sexual partners. An alarming 50% to 75% of the people suffering from Chlamydia usually do not have any symptoms.

What is Chlamydia?

Chlamydia is an STI, which can be passed through unprotected vaginal, anal or oral sex with a partner infected with the disease. As per the NHS Chlamydia page, 206,912 people in England tested positive for the disease in the year 2012. More than 64% of people that tested positive for this were under 25 years of age. Chlamydia is equally prevalent between men as well as women and may also lead to Urinary Tract Infections (UTI). Women who suffer from Chlamydia are at risk of infecting their reproductive system, which can lead to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID). PID can lead to infertility or other issues during pregnancy that can cause the baby to be born with pneumonia or eye infections. PID can also cause premature births; hence, it is advisable to check for Chlamydia during pregnancy. Men who suffer from Chlamydia can cause infection to the tube (epididymis) that carries the sperm. In some cases it leads to infertility in men, while in others it can cause fever and general body pains.

What are the Symptoms?

Though most cases of Chlamydia don’t have symptoms, there are a few cases where the symptoms are apparent. Some of the most common symptoms of Chlamydia are as follows. Read More...

HIV Still an Issue

One of the major concerns for the people in the UK is how medical and healthcare is being monitored and what steps are being taken by the political parties to implement strategies and law governing them.

Present day scenario:

People across the UK have major concerns on multiple issues however the case of HIV being on the rise is a serious issue. HIV is not exactly rampant in UK but there are clear "at risk" groups where infctions are on the rise. Agreed, it is not an epidemic but is the government going to wait till then? There are many signs and red flags that must be dealt with immediately. It is acceptable that while HIV is on the rise, there are various precautionary measures in place too. The National Health Service is offering free HIV testing for people and is also working with experts from the medical and health industry to better understand the gravity of the issue in order to better deal with it. In fact, free sexual health testing is also being offered online. This is a great choice for men and women who prefer some privacy and like being discrete about their health status.

HIV testing:

In connection to the HIV tests conducted, they are of two different types. One is Antibody testing and the other is Antigen testing. Antibody testing is more affordable and is a common way most people choose to have themselves HIV tested. In the case of Antigen testing, the results can be discovered quite soon after infection (as soon as 10 days).   Read More...

Remote Patient Monitoring

What is Remote Patient Monitoring?

The healthcare industry is slowly moving to remote patient monitoring (RPM) which collects medical and other health related data remotely through the use of digital technology. This means that individuals no longer have to make unnecessary trips to clinics and hospitals in order to provide their health care providers with vital information needed to sustain their health as part of their treatment plan. RPM allows them to safely and securely transmit their health information to their health care providers from the comfort of their homes. Their health care providers who can be located anywhere can then assess the information they receive and make recommendations.

Some examples of information collected and transmitted include:

Fighting HIV

From the beginning, tackling the HIV epidemic wasn't an easy thing to do. Not only was the diseas unknown and there was no precedent in medicaiton for the virus, but also a heavy cloak of social prejudice was tightly associated with this infection. In a time when homophobia was much stronger than it is today, at least in countries like ours, the fact that the vast majority of HIV infections were diagnosed among gay men quickly made everyone believe it was a "gay disease", and thus, as shameful and vicious as homosexuality itself. However, this association weakened in time. Not only did women and straight men get diagnosed as well, even if the number was significantly lower, but scientists determined that the reason HIV was so prevalent among men who have sex with men wasn't because it was a sexual orientation specific disease, but because the sexual practices more frequent among men with men - such as anal sex and the quick exchange of sexual partners - were risk factors for HIV contagion.

Nowadays, science has gone a long way, and even if the disease is still a thing and there is no approved cure, medication that decreases contagion and helps treat the symptoms and save lives is now available. Even preventive drugs have been working wonders, especially in high risk population. There is a good chance that deffinitive treatment, perhaps even erradication, of this infection is soon to be a reality.  Read More...
